SCAM ALERT
about online kitten and cat sellers--
PLEASE READ FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION!
Scammers have been stealing cat and kitten photos
from legitimate breeders' websites (and facebook)
and posting ads on free online classified websites.
They don't have any cats at all in their possession,
they take your money, and never send you a cat. Usually
you have no legal recourse because typically the scammers
are located in another country and this being an Internet
crime, it makes it very hard to track the people down
and prosecute or ever get your money back. Scammers
have stolen some of my cat photos in the past, which
is why I am watermarking all my photos now to prevent
them from doing this in the future.
Scammers have been using my watermarked
and copyrighted kitten photos for online classified
ads and pretending to be affiliated with me. I
DO NOT EVER ADVERTISE ANY KITTENS ON ANY ONLINE CLASSIFIED
WEBSITE. I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY ONLINE ADS.
THE ONLY PLACE I ADVERTISE KITTENS IS ON THIS WEBSITE
AND THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN LEGITIMATELY BUY
A REAL WILDTRAX BENGAL OR MAU.
How to protect yourself from scams:
-
Send a deposit or full payment
in a payment form where you have some recourse,
if the seller does not send you a kitten in the
agreed upon time frame. Payments sent through Paypal
or your credit/debit cards offer you the ability
to file a complaint through the company and get
your money back if the seller was a scammer and
does not send you a kitten. Payments sent by wire
transfer, money grams, green dot cards, prepaid
money cards, checks, money orders, etc, have no
recourse once you send it to the seller. A scammer
will insist on a payment form that has no recourse
because they can just take your money and disappear.
Usually the scammers are out of state or out of
the country and the amounts are small enough that
the police or FBI can't really do anything to get
your money back. At Wildtrax, we accept a deposit
by paypal, credit or debit cards, or money orders
to reserve the ktiten, and we tell you at that time
what date your kitten will be ready to go home with
you. Your remaining balance is not due until that
ready date and we can meet in person and you pick
up your kitten. Breeders who offer shipping will
require full payment before the kitten ships, and
in that case paying by Paypal or Credit/Debit card
would be the safest option unless you have done
your homework and are sure the breeder is reputable
and legit, and really has the kitten you think you
are buying. In that case, you should be safe to
send a money order, wire transfer, or cashiers check.
-
Before you spend any money on
a cat, especially if the breeder has no website
and you found them on a classified site or newspaper,
be sure to do your research about the person and
cattery to make sure they really exist. GOOGLE the
person's phone number or email address...if they
are a legitimate breeder, you will get something
back in the search results that confirms this. There
are entire online classified websites that are nothing
but scams to steal your money.
- Ask for current videos or photos of your kitten
with the current date shown in the photo or spoken
on the video--this proves the seller really has the
kitten you want to buy, and it is not a scammer. If
they can't come up with a photo or video with the
current date on it, then it proves they are a scammer
using stolen photos or videos, pretending to have
kittens they don't have.
- ASK QUESTIONS. A legitimate breeder can properly
answer basic questions about the breed they raise,
about the parents, etc. If you have done any research
on your selected breed, then you should be able to
recognize if what they are telling you is proper or
not. Sometimes they will steal breed information off
other website though. If they do not really seem to
know much about the breed, they tell you improper
information such as the cats are "AKC registered"(this
is incorrect as AKC is for dogs not cats), and don't
seem to know much about the parents, RED FLAG. If
they cannot come up with photos of the parents or
don't have photos of the parents on their website,
this is suspicious. Trust your instincts, if you feel
something is fishy, then it probably is.
-
Buy your pedigree cat from an
established breeder that has been around a while.
Any breeder that has invested a lot of money into
quality healhty breeding cats will also invest in
a website, usually will be listed on at least one
or more paid online breeding listings, in legitimate
print magazines like CAT FANCY, and do not rely
on free online classified websites or newspaper
classified advertising alone. Google the person
or cattery. Look them up on Facebook. Make sure
they exist in real life. One online breeder listing
website that is legitimate for bengal breeders is
http://www.bengalbreed.com/public/index.php
This website only allows listing by references of
other breeders so everyone listed should actually
exist.
-
You should research your selected
breed and visit various websites for that breed,
so that you have a good base knowledge about the
breed and about general price range of your breed.
If you find an ad where the price of the cat and
quality of the cat are TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN
IT IS! Some of my own breeder friends' photos have
been stolen of very nice show quality cats, worth
well over $1000s, but scammers advertised these
same cats for as little as $200-250. If you see
an ad for a show quality cat, like the ones you
see in magazines, for a very small amount of money,
then this is a RED FLAG of a possible scam. Trust
your instincts. No one is giving away top show quality
cats at rock bottom prices.
- If you are located in the US, and the kittens for
sale are located out of the country, and the shipping
rate is very low, then this is a red flag. International
shipping of pets costs in the thousands and requires
import and export permits. Shipping a kitten within
the US ranges anywhere fromm 200-450 depending on
what airline is used. If the seller tells you the
kitten is outside the US and they can ship it for
less than $2000, then it is a scam and you will lose
your money and not receive a kitten.
- If the breeder is very aggressive and continues
to pressure you into buying a kitten or even starts
harassing behavior, then this is a red flag. You should
make it clear to the person that you do not have any
money to buy a kitten and cease communications immediatly
before harassment escalates. You may have to block
their email and phone number to make it stop.
- If you happen to recognize a breeders photos from
their website being used by someone else, on a different
classified website, or you are emailed photos from
someone after inquiring to an ad, then please contact
that breeder you think the photos belong to, and ask
them if they are affiliated with the person that sent
you the photos or have an ad on that website. I know
of several cases were ENTIRE websites have been stolen
and copied, so double check you are communicating
with the real breeder. You can do an image search
on google using the photo file name and see if it
comes back to the same breeder who emailed the photo
to you or someone else. If the breeder is not affiliated
with that person and their photos were stolen, the
true owner of the photos can contact the website the
stolen photos/websites are on and request the photos/websites
be taken down and we can eliminate one more scam on
the Internet by working and communicating together.
